What is skin aging ?

We all want to have soft, supple, smooth and clear skin to feel young. But our daily lifestyle exposes us to UV rays, pollution and harmful chemicals which causes constant cellular breakdown. We start showing signs of ageing on our skin such as wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation spots, increased pore size and overall our skin becomes dry and looses its glow. The scars from teenage acne become deeper and more pronounced as we grow old.  

With age our body’s capacity to rejuvenate our skin cells becomes slower. The speed at which the internal cells move to the surface is called the corneocyte turnover rate.  When we are young it is fast and as we grow old it becomes slower and slower. All this leads to skin aging.  

The cells below the surface do not regenerate fast enough as we age. They take a long time to come on the surface to form the surface cells called the corneocytes, these slow moving internal epidermal cells form hard corneocytes of irregular shape when they come on the surface. When we are young these cells regenerate fast and move fast to the surface, since they move at a rapid rate they do not harden when they come to the surface, they also hence stay small and dont have too much keratin in them, this causes young skin to stay soft and smooth.

Market is flooded with anti aging creams, but most of them do not tackle all the issues or have many chemicals. There are antiaging creams for dry skin, oily skin, sensitive skin, creams with increase hyaluronic acid, creams which depigment and so on and so forth. One has to be a prudent expert to understand what will suit them the best.

It's not just us saying it, we have done cell lines tests which show that the cream actually makes your skin young by increasing the turnover rate, it increases collagen and elastin formation, increases the genetic expression of aquaporin or moisturization channels in the skin, increases the formation of hyaluronic acid and stops the skin breakdown genes such as MMP1 and MMP9.

UV damage – We all know about damage caused by sun’s UV rays. It is recommended to put a good SPF cream before stepping out. But alas we still cannot protect ourselves from the damage completely.  These harmful UV rays cause damage to our skin cells called keratinocytes by increasing the oxidative stress. This leads to free radical production, faster death of our skin cells, increased melanin pigmentation etc. which all causes fine lines and wrinkles. This is also called as photoaging.

·  It blocks the skin damage caused by oxidative stress by 67% in human keratinoctyes cell line study. It thus blocks UV mediated keratinocyte damage or damage due to ROS oxidative stress. 

Pollution damage – Environmental pollution increases the oxidative stress, clogs our pores, breaks down our skin collagen and elastin. This all causes skin damage and rapid aging signs on the face.
Tocyen has protection against pollution induced skin damage by 47% in our cell line studies. It also increases collagen gene expression and elastin gene expression in human dermal fibroblast cells thereby increasing collagen and elastin production in our skin.

Antioxidants for our skin – We all know we need to have more antioxidants to combat the oxidative stress and free radicals formed by our skin.  Tocyen showed very good antioxidant properties with 125.8% protection against oxidative stress in the human Keratinocytes cell line.

Moisturization - Tocyen showed moisturizing effect by increasing the AQP-3 gene expression levels in Human Keratinocytes cell line in a dose dependent manner. 

MMP1 gene expression -As expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in human skin increases there is degradation of the collagen, fibronectin, elastin, and proteoglycans, contributing to photoaging. The less the expression of MMP1 gene, the less is the degradation of collagen in the body. Tocyen showed reduction in the MMP1 gene expression thereby showing its capacity to prevent the damage to skin collagen and elastin.

You can see we take our creams development very seriously. The aim was to have just once cream which can literally do the job of a number of creams. We have used over 16 actives whereas most commercial anti-aging creams barely use 5.
